Speaking today at a Council of Europe discussion on the role of women in the Islamic region, Souhayr Belhassen, President of the FIDH, insisted that women’s and human rights must play a role in the new Tunisia forged by the ‘Arab Spring.’
Relying on Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment) of the Convention, Ammar Al Hanchi complains that his deportation would expose him to the risk of ill-treatment, as he had joined the foreign mujahedin in Bosnia and Herzegovina and would therefore be treated as a suspected terrorist in Tunisia.
The award is given every two years to two personalities who have distinguished themselves by their commitment to the promotion of human rights, the development of the intercultural dialogue and the strengthening of solidarity between North and South.
A 20-member Parliamentary Assembly delegation will join international observers in Tunisia from 20 to 24 October for the election of a constituent National Assembly.
