Hammarberg highlights rise in Swiss racism
Human rights commissioner Thomas Hammarberg has today highlighted his fears about a rise in racism and xenophobia in Switzerland.
Human rights commissioner Thomas Hammarberg has today highlighted his fears about a rise in racism and xenophobia in Switzerland.
In a letter to Kenneth Clarke, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, the human rights commissioner writes: “Youngsters who are imprisoned tend to re-offend upon release; the re-offending rates remaining above 70% in the United Kingdom.”
“Persons with disabilities have long been cut off and forced to lead lives of isolation, in large-scale institutions or the back-rooms of family homes,” states the Commissioner for Human Rights.
Government failure to take seriously the findings of the report published earlier this week by the human rights commissioner would be “both irresponsible and inhumane,” according to the European Roma and Travellers Forum.
The forces now ranged against Roma communities, if left unchecked, will soon seek a defining conflict with the guardians of democracy and the rule of law also.
