New E-books: Freedom of expression and the media

Two new electronic publications by the European Audiovisual Observatory provide an up to date analysis of the Council of Europe’s work on freedom of expression and the media.

Mahmoud Abbas: “We are at the heart of the Arab spring”

In his speech today to the Parliamentary Assembly, Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority, reaffirmed his demand for a Palestinian state, set conditions for future peace negotiations with Israel and embraced the ‘Arab Spring.’

Assembly hearing on coercive sterilisations and castrations

The Paris hearing, organised by the Committee on Social, Health and Family Affairs, will focus in particular on coercive sterilisations of Romani women, convicted sex offenders and transgender persons.

Mediterranean ‘boat people’ deaths: Assembly visits Italy

The Parliamentary Assembly’s Tineke Strik will be in Rome on 6 and 7 September and is scheduled to meet Mediterranean Sea shipwreck survivors, officers of Italian coastguard units, representatives of NGOs and representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
