Podcast: Ineta Ziemele – “The European Court cannot be a front-runner on freedom of expression”

In this podcast, Latvia’s former European Court judge Ineta Ziemele, admits that the court “cannot be a front-runner” on issues of freedom of expression in the digital era.

The judge, now a member of her country’s constitutional court, was speaking ahead of a 29 April international conference in Nicosia, Cyprus, which addresses many of the opportunities and challenges that free expression in the internet age raises.

“The court is certainly capable of taking stock and adjudicating and is perfectly able to adapt to how societies evolve.” But Judge Ziemele adds. “The court can’t tell the states – ‘this is how you legislate.”
