Serbia: Nils Muižnieks voices fears over war victims’ reparations

In a letter to Serbia’s government, Nils Muižnieks has revealed his fear that war victims could remain without access to adequate and effective reparations.

“The issue is of the utmost importance for the on-going process of achieving social cohesion as well as justice and a lasting reconciliation in the region as a whole,” the Commissioner for Human Rights declares in his letter to Aleksandar Vulin, Minister for Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs.

Muižnieks first raised the issue with Serbia in a report published last year.

He is worried that some 15,000 people will be excluded if Serbia’s parliament adopts a new bill on the rights of veterans, disabled veterans, civilian disabled war victims and their family members.
