In this podcast, Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb, discusses how Europe should integrate refugees and migrants, in order to build inclusive “we societies.”
Earlier today, Aboutaleb joined Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and Nils Muižnieks, the Commissioner for Human Rights at a Council of the European Union event, organised under the Netherlands EU presidency, to discuss the contribution of funadamental values to Europe’s policy response to the migration crisis.
Jagland warned governments away from “knee-jerk” reactions.
“We should be very wary of legislation to introduce blanket and arbitrary waiting times before families can be reunited – whether one year or more – if they are applied across-the-board, with no consideration given to individual circumstances,” he said.
Muižnieks offered a sober assesment of Europe’s willingness to promote integration. “The atmosphere is more toxic,” he argued. “Europe is a darker place.”
