Jailed Azerbaijan activist Intigam Aliyev should be released as a matter of urgence, declares the President of the Conference of International non-governmental organisations, in a letter to the country’s President Ilham Aliyev.
Anna Rurka writes: “I know that at present Aliyev is a prisoner in your country. I was also informed that his health is deteriorating in prison.
“I am asking you, Mr President, to personally ensure that Aliyev receives complete and necessary treatment for all medical concerns.
“The resolution 2062 (2015) on ‘Functioning of democratic institutions in Azerbaijan,’ adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly last month requires the release of ‘all political prisoners, including those who have co-operated with the Parliamentary Assembly.’
“In view of this document, I call upon you most urgently to use your authority to release Aliyev from imprisonment.”
The Conference of International non-governmental organisations comprises 320 international NGOs and represents member state civil society organisations. Last April, Intigam Aliyev was appointed as a member of the Expert Council on NGO Law, one of the organs of the Conference of INGOs. His 3-year mandate started on 3 July and Rurka hopes to “receive a goodwill response” from Azerbaijan’s President before the council’s meeting in September.
