Alternative sentencing conference opens in Yerevan

A conference opens today in Armenia to encourage alternatives to jail terms.

Contributors to the Yerevan event, entitled: ‘Reducing use of custodial sentences in line with European standards,’ will discuss ways of bringing the Armenian prison system closer to European standards, notably to the European Prison Rules.

The conference will also refer to other recommendations of the Council of Europe, such as the Council of Europe Probation Rules, the CPT standards and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
