In this podcast, gender equality expert Anne-Marie Faradji outlines the unfairness of a bias towards men in government spending at national and local level.
According to Ms Faradji, prevailing stereotypes mean that the concerns of girls and women receive less attention and assistance, especially at local level, with budgets “in every area” skewed in favour of male interests.
The Council of Europe has already signalled its fears that girls may be getting a raw deal from the provision of municipal sports facilities.
As part of its gender mainstreaming programme, the organisation has been working with civil servants in Armenia and the “former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” since 2012, to highlight the issue of budget bias.
