Fears for women’s rights in Turkey

At its meeting in Paris, the Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination expressed deep concern at “setbacks” to women’s rights in Turkey.

The committee’s action followed the announcement made by the Turkish Health Minister Recep Akdag that legislation outlawing abortion in all circumstances would be presented by the end of June.

The committee, which met on 4 June, also noted statements by high government officials, including the Turkish Prime Minister, equalling abortion to murder and identifying abortion and “elective caesareans” as the causes for the slow population growth in the country.
