Public support for the rights of lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) people is the focus of this interview with Patricia Prendiville.
The Irish representative to the board of the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency also discusses the role of European institutions in ensuring the human rights of LGBT people and expresses concern about the impact of austerity on “the forces of equality.”
On the first day of the Council of Europe-sponsored conference on recognition for same sex marriages, Madrid University professor José Ignacio Pichardo Galan confirmed the importance of public opinion in swaying Spanish legislators towards accepting same sex marriages in the country.
Some 20,000 LGBT couples have married in the six years since the government allowed same sex unions.
