Whitmore wants action on Turkey’s “massive detention” of local politicians

Human rights Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg will be asked to investigate Turkey’s “massive detention” of local politicians from the south east of the country.

The move was announced earlier today by Congress’ President Keith Whitmore. His request follows a visit by a delegation from the Congress to mayor Leyla Güven on 6 October. The mayor of Viransehir Municipality and a member of the Turkish delegation to the Congress, has been held since December 2009, alongside other local politicians alleged to have links with a terrorist organisation.

The Congress also wants the Council of Europe’s anti-torture committee to examine the conditions under which Ms Güven is detained in the Diyarbakir E-Type prison.

Whitmore revealed that the Congress would send another delegation next year to meet with Leyla Güven.
