In a speech today to the Parliamentary Assembly, Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority, reaffirmed his demand for a Palestinian state and outlined his conditions for future peace negotiations with Israel.
He also embraced this year’s ‘Arab Spring’ movements. “We Palestinians have always been at the heart of the movement of Arab peoples aspiring to freedom,” he declared. “We have always been committed to democratic traditions, respecting pluralism and the freedom of opinion and expression, and this has long been a source of pride for us and a source of inspiration for our brothers from other Arab nations.
“You supported the Arab spring which was seeking democracy and freedom. Now the Palestinian spring has arrived asking for freedom and an end to the occupation. Today we are at the heart of the Arab spring.”
