Mediterranean ‘boat people’ deaths: Assembly visits Italy

A Parliamentary Assembly rapporteur investigating the deaths of ‘boat people’ fleeing Libya earlier this year, will make a fact-finding visit to Italy next week.

Tineke Strik will be in Rome on 6 and 7 September and is scheduled to meet Mediterranean Sea shipwreck survivors, officers of Italian coastguard units, representatives of NGOs and representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

During the visit, Strik will also examine the way boats are intercepted – or not intercepted – by national coastguard forces, or by military vessels under NATO or national command.

The Assembly’s Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population appointed Strik in June to lead the inquiry following reports that migrants and refugees died after their distress calls were ignored.
