GRETA

Anti-human trafficking unit publishes first report

A new report on the traffic in human beings in Europe is published today.

The Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) report takes stock of the first two and a half years of GRETA’s existence, reflects on the challenges that lie ahead and offers information on the procedural and organisational framework for GRETA’s activities and working methods.

GRETA is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings, now in force in 34 member states.

Between September 2010 and June 2011, GRETA evaluated the 10 countries which became Parties to the Convention (Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Georgia, Moldova, Romania and the Slovak Republic). The first three evaluation reports adopted by GRETA, concerning Cyprus, Austria and the Slovak Republic, will be made public later this month.

The report stresses that increased co-ordination by international organisations would enhance the effectiveness of international action against trafficking in human beings.

GRETA also expresses the hope that the area of application of the convention will be further expanded to include all Council of Europe member states as well as non-member states and the European Union.
