Aiding the Arab Spring

When Mohamed Bouazizi set himself ablaze in the Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid last December, he also ignited protests which swept away the country’s old regime and inspired revolts elsewhere in the Arab world.

Two months later, Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland visited Tunisia to offer the Council of Europe’s practical cooperation. That offer has since been followed-up with support from the Parliamentary Assembly, the Venice Commission, the Pompidou Group and the North-South Centre.

In this special report, the Council of Europe reveals the extent of its backing for the Arab Spring.
