Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has welcomed Azerbaijan’s decision to release jailed journalist Eynulla Fatullayev.
In a 30 May letter to Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, he writes: “Fatullayev’s liberation is an important gesture in terms of promoting freedom of the media in Azerbaijan.
“His release will enable implementation of the judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in his case, including as regards the just satisfaction decided upon by the court.
The Secretary General also reaffirms his offer of working with Azerbaijan authorities to bring “ both the country’s legislation and its administrative and judicial practices to the level expected from a member state of our organisation.”
