Thorbjørn Jagland: Only totalitarian regimes want a weakened European court

Weakening the European Court of Human Rights would serve only the interests of repressive regimes and totalitarian states, Thorbjørn Jagland has warned.

In article in the Danish newspaper Politiken, the Secretary General states that governments agreed to subject some parts of their national systems to external audit bodies like the court. This provided citizens with protection against changing political elites.

Jagland adds that the court’s working process is under review in order to find ways to simplify it by setting up a mechanism which would ensure that cases that aren’t relevant would be dismissed.
