Minority protection unit reports on Finland

A minority protection report on Finland expresses “deep concern” at stalled Sami people land rights negotiations and urges authorities to widen the availability of minority language media.

The Council of Europe Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities published its report today.

It is encouraged by legislative and institutional reform initiatives by the Finnish authorities designed to foster protection against discrimination but notes incidents of racism and xenophobia, particularly on the Internet.

The report recommends that representation and influence of national minorities in the decision-making processes affecting them must be increased.
