An offer to Tunisia to take up ‘partner for democracy’ status with the Parliamentary Assembly has been confirmed.
At a 9 March meeting, the Assembly’s Rapporteur Anne Brasseur said the conditional agreement with parliaments of countries neighbouring the Council of Europe would enable their delegations to take part in Assembly activities on an institutional basis.
Brasseur stressed that while the assembly could provide Tunisians with models and advice, it should not give the impression that “we are in any way patronising them.”
The Assembly will discuss the situation in Tunisia during its June session, ahead of elections for a constituent assembly scheduled for 24 July.
