A joint Council of Europe – European Union project to raise the standards of Ukrainian journalism is to continue for a further two years, it has been confirmed.
The project, running since September 2008, aims to support the development of free and pluralistic media.
Much of the project will be devoted to the alignment of Ukraine’s media-related legislation with that of the European Union and with Council of Europe standards on freedom of expression and information.
Assistance will also be given to the establishment of a genuine public-service broadcaster, for improving the effectiveness, independence and transparence of the media regulator and for the implementation of a new law on access to information.
Expert advice will be on hand throughout the period of transition to digital broadcasting in order to guarantee fair, transparent and non-discriminatory access to the new systems and services.
