Christos Pourgourides:Turkey Must “Lead By Example” On ECHR Compliance

New “urgent and decisive” legislative action by Turkish authorities is needed to comply with the European Court of Human Rights judgements, the Parliamentary Assembly has warned.

The verdict of Christos Pourgourides (Cyprus, EPP/CD), the Parliamentary Assembly rapporteur on the implementation of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, followed his two-day visit to Ankara (10-11 January).

“The Turkish authorities, presently chairing the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, must lead by example and take urgent and decisive action to abide by Strasbourg Court judgments,” he said.

“I count on my fellow parliamentarians, in particular, to effectively monitor and rapidly enact legislation to counter a certain dilatoriness in this respect.”
